We flew from San Jose, CA to San Jose, Costa Rica and got on a bus for the northern part of the country. We stopped at a few small towns... mostly for shopping, I guess, but I appreciated the effort that went into the front of the shop!
We made our way to Arenal volcano...
...where the first stop was a natural hot spring that fed several pools. The water coming out of the mountain was actually too hot for me and Phoebe, so we spent more time in the other pools...
...which wasn't bad since some of the other pools had a view of the volcano...
...and it was here that Phoebe (and the other kids) learned how great it is to have a bar at the pool (they made the kids smoothies).
When we got to our room, it turned out that this was our view! Not bad, eh?
And this little guy greeted us every day when we walked out on our porch...
We made a few excursions... our first was to see some frogs...
But before we even made it to the frogs we found leaf cutter ants... and the kids were enthralled!
Our guide, Roy, told us about how leaf cutter ants use the leaves they harvest to grow fungi that they live on. They were the first gardeners, apparently. I have the utmost respect for these creatures... they work REALLY hard and go a long way to harvest some of their leaves.
Did I mention that they're really strong??? That's an ant holding the stick!
And then, of course, there were the frogs... awesome!
Some were colorful...
And some were cryptic...
And all were big hits with the kids...
One thing I learned about Costa Rica is that when it rains it comes down HARD!
We actually had great weather while we were there (other than the fact that it's like 90 degrees and 100% humidity all the time). We never got rained out of an activity... due in part to the fact that no one really minded swimming in the rain!
